Collaboration Shoots - Something for Free?

31st December 2025

I posted a piece called What’s Next, which I outlined what I have planned for 2020 and beyond with my photography. In it - under the People Photos section - I mention collaboration shoots, and briefly describe what they are.
I have carried out these kind of shoots quite a few times in the past (in fact all the images in this post are from collaboration shoots), but the demand for client work meant that I had to give priority to paying customers (and rightly so). This unfortunately meant many never came to fruition. Given that I won’t be working for paying clients anymore, these collaboration shoots should go ahead as planned every time.

So what are Collaboration shoots and how do they work?
Collaboration shoots, also called TFP (Time for Prints) - with other variants such as TFCD (Time for CD (of digital images)), or simply TF (Time for) - are photoshoots, where the photographer trades prints or images with the model as payment for their time spent modelling. a model or image release form as part of the agreement. They are standard practice in the photography world, where photographers and models can both add to their portfolios without paying fees to each other.

Who can have a collaboration or TFI shoot?
Anyone that wants a set of images for themselves (or their portfolio) but can’t afford the professional fees that usually accompany a photo shoot.

Who chooses what images are taken during the shoot?
Ideally, both the model and photographer will have areas of the shoot which they benefit. This will be discussed before the shoot takes place.

What happens with the images?
They will be used for the photographer’s portfolio, whether that is online, and/or as prints. The model will have some control of image use through the model release (see below) but it should be remembered that

What is a model/image release?
Part of a collaboration shoot will be the use of a model or image release. This is a basic contract between the model and the photographer, where the model will agree that the copyright of the images will remain with the photographer, and the model can stipulate which images can and cannot be used by the photographer.

What are the specifics of a collaboration shoot with me?
Experience
No experience necessary. I have photographed lots of people with no modelling experience. They were called customers. I am happy to direct you throughout the photo session.

Location
I don’t have a studio space. Outdoor shoots are easy to deal with, but indoor shoots (mostly beauty/boudoir) will be ‘home’ shoots, taken at the models home. If another location has to be rented or hired, the costs will be shared equally between the model and myself.

Beauty/Boudoir
These shoots are for over 18s only and the prospective model should be fairly body confident.

Chaperones
I don’t shoot one-to-one, all models must have a friend with them to act as a chaperone during the shoot.

Image delivery
All images will be sent as digital files via an online sharing site.

How to get a TF shoot.
Keep an eye out on my social media platforms for any model calls which I may post. They will normally have specific requirements.
Alternatively, contact me and register your interest in having a TF shoot. Just let me know what kind of shoot you are happy to do (and any ideas you may have - although that’s not compulsory), and I’ll get back to you to discuss further.
