Gorleston Beach - Food For The Soul

26th January 2020

Gorleston is my home town, and as many of you know, it boasts a beautiful beach. I'm lucky to have such a great location right on my doorstep. It's fantastic to be able to drop over there in quick time should the chance of a shoot arise. The day in question was one such opportunity.

As you will have probably noticed, the weather most recent weekends has either been grey and overcast, or very bright and sunny, with nothing in between. Whilst the overcast skies are good for long exposure shots like my recent shoot at Hopton, however I do crave broken cloud with some sun to give a little bit of interest in the skies.
The day of this shoot was bright and cloudless, but as sunset approached I noticed a bit cloud beginning to form, and it was heading towards the coast. I thought I'd chance it and head to my favourite seaside bolt-hole of Gorleston Beach. I had seen on social media that a large pool had formed on the land side of the iconic breakwater, which I thought would make an interesting image. When I arrived it had disappeared, along with the cloud, so instead I rushed along the the cliffs to capture some shots there instead.

I had in mind to take some minimalistic images, something different, and also challenging. After a brief look along the shore line, I saw this composition which I though looked appealing. The stone in the bottom of the frame did get moved by some strong waves a couple of times, which meant I had to re-compose twice before managing to work on getting the shot. It was then a case of timing the retreating wave to get the effect I was after.

I do like this one. I think the colours and the texture of the water hold the interest and draw your eye into the image.

Next up was this image of the sea defence groynes. I take alot of images of these - another can be seen in this blog post, but there is something appealing about the geometry which makes the photo interesting.

Again the colours make this different to ones I have taken before, and give it an entirely different mood.

As the sun went down over the cliffs the view looking towards Hopton changed. The tide was beginning to rise, so the waves were creeping further and further up the shore towards the sea defences. It was the light reflecting on the incoming waves which gave a nice contrast to the scene.

I was going to call it a day after that shot, but I did capture one final image looking back out to sea, and the increasingly bigger waves which were washing in. Once again it was the texture and patterns created by the waves which caught my eye. There is something mesmerising about watching (and listening) to the sea as it crashes against the sands. It's no wonder I am drawn back there time and time again. It's definitely food for the soul.

Photo comment By Tracy Taylor: They are all stunning in their own right... But my favourite is the first one...so much for the eye to savour in this one...it encompasses the beach (Gorleston) for me. 😊
